Rye, Rebels, & Restraint: Uxbridge During Prohibition

This is a virtual exhibition, developed from our 2019 physical exhibit. It is developed in partnership  with Central Counties Ontario’s Temperance and Temptation experience tours that tell the story of the War on Whiskey in York Durham and Headwaters.

This exhibition explores Uxbridge’s key figures during the prohibition era and the rebellious ways the townspeople illegally maneuvered around abstinence. Throughout its history, from the establishment of the first tavern in 1825, to the 1974 municipal vote to repeal prohibition, the Township of Uxbridge has held opposing views and opinions regarding temperance and the consumption of alcohol.
